Prehistoric inhabitants of the hillfort

Who formed the Hallstatt Period society?

People were gradually divided into various social classes, depending on their way of subsistence and their social status. The base of the society consisted of peasants, whereas the highest position was occupied by a narrow group of princes, who have been buried with immense riches (e. g. jewellery, luxurious weapons). But besides peasants and princes, Hallstatt Period society also comprised warriors, above all equestrians. Another very important social groups were merchants and various craftsmen (e. g. blacksmiths).

When people of the Hallstatt Period built the first ramparts, palisades and houses at Chotěbuz-Podobora, thousands of kilometres away – in the Near East – flourished the Assyrian Empire, the Phoenicians founded Carthage, and Greek city-states began to rise. In the 5th century BC, when the settlement at Chotěbuz declined for some time, the Greeks have fought against the Persians, Athens and Sparta were at the top of their power, and the early Roman Republic began to develop.
